Possibile che il virus dell’herpes
labiale possa nascondere una speranza per il morbo di Alzheimer?
Secondo un articolo pubblicato da
InfoSalute, uno studio dell'Università di Manchester avrebbe
rivelato l'esistenza una stretta correlazione tra due malattie tanto
diverse.
I ricercatori sostengono infatti che al
virus HSV-1 sarebbero imputabili più della metà dei casi di
Alzheimer. Nei pazienti affetti dal morbo, il virus dell’herpes
simplex labiale provocherebbe danni gravissimi alle cellule cerebrali
che, morendo, produrrebbero una proteina che andrebbe a depositarsi
tra i neuroni, paralizzando i neurotrasmettitori.
Per fortuna la scoperta sembra non
aver rilevato una maggiore predisposizione nei pazienti ammalati di
herpes simplex labiale a sviluppare anche il morbo di Alzheimer.
La buona notizia è che i ricercatori
sembrano propensi a credere che alcuni farmaci antivirali utilizzati
per l'herpes simplex possano avere un impatto positivo anche nella
lotta all'Alzheimer.
Se così fosse una semplice campagna di
vaccinazione contro il virus potrebbe salvaguardare la nostra salute
a livelli ben più elevati.
